A’s Begin Playoffs Tonight
Posted: August 5, 2011
The Sheboygan A’s take an 11-game winning streak into tonight’s Northeastern Wisconsin League playoffs opener at Wildwood Park.
Pitching has been super, defense has been solid and hitting, if not super abundant, has been timely. Manager Shaun Wegner is hoping the trend continues for another week.
The A’s host the Menasha Macs tonight at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 is at Menasha Saturday at 7:15 p.m., and the third game, if necessary will be back in Sheboygan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The A’s have qualified for the four-team playoffs all four years of the NWL’s existence, but have not won the title. This is the fifth season.
The A’s and Menasha split four games this season, with Menasha winning the first two, 8-5 and 5-3, and Sheboygan winning the last two, 5-2 and 6-5.
Over the years, the clubs have played 124 games in the series that began in 1967. The A’s hold a 72-52 advantage.
Colin Weyer (6-2, 2.34) will start the opener, with Jack Archie (2-0, 2.72) to go Saturday and Ben Stanczyk (5-0, 1.80) on Sunday if needed.
The A’s have eight players hitting between .252 and .298, but do not have a .300 hitter, save for Ben Stanczyk, who is at .524, but in only 22 plate appearances.
Notes: Fans are invited to meet at the ballpark at 5:20 Saturday to organize a caravan of cars to go to Menasha and support the club at Koslo Field. … Openings remain for the Aug. 13 Snipe Scramble, the club’s annual fundraising golf outing at Town & Country. … The club has canceled the excursion to the Aug. 28 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game. … The Sheboygan A’s Burger is the sandwich of the month at Weimann’s Sports Center. … The annual A’s awards banquet is scheduled for Jan. 7 at Breaking Bread. A’s fans are encouraged to attend.
