A’s Split Weekend With Lombard
Posted: June 27, 2011
To say that the Lombard Orioles are the class of the Wisconsin State Baseball League is to understate a 500-foot home run.
After all, the Orioles have won or tied for the league title for the past seven straight years, nine of the last 10, and 11 of the last 13.
Ordinarily a split on the road is an okay thing, but a split at Lombard is a very good thing.
The A’s split their 4-game series in the Chicago suburb this weekend, winning Sunday’s opener 3-0, and then dropping the nightcap 3-2. It came after a Saturday split that saw the A’s win 3-2 and lose 11-1.
Collin Weyer threw a 6-hit shutout at the powerful Orioles in the first game, escaping a last-inning Lombard rally by throwing a ground ball that his teammates turned into a game-ending double play.
Ryan Schilter drove in one of the A’s runs with a 2-out double. Hits by Greg Rhude and Taylor Schwarz contributed to a second run and Schilter’s hit combined with Harry Steldt’s sac-bunt and an error got the third run home.
Ben Stanczyk kept Lombard at bay in the second game.
Derek Peake, Ryan Solberg and Ryan Schilter singled to give the A’s a 1-0 first inning lead, but Rick Angell, who played 330 games in the Texas Rangers minor league system, hit a home run in Lombard’s half of the inning for a 1-1 tie.
Lombard took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, but Tim Patzman tied it again in the sixth with his second home run of the weekend. Lombard got the win off reliever Connor Lenz in the seventh. A couple hits, some wildness and a dropped ball at the plate allowed the winning run to score.
The A’s are now 4-2 in the State League and 10-6 overall.
They host Menasha in a Northeastern Wisconsin League game Tuesday night at Wildwood at 7:30. The A’s will welcome groups from Weimann’s Sports Center, Shorewest Realty and the Sheboygan County Baseball Oldtimers. The Diamonds U10 team will partner with the A’s that night. Eric Van Beck is scheduled to pitch
